Home and Mobile Wireless Security Solutions

Home Users have one big disadvantage - their network is not moving. At first this seems simple, but let the impact of a stationary network sink in. A bored teenager within a city block range with nothing better to do with his time can setup a $50 laptop that does nothing but monitor and try to break into the neighboring home wireless network. And since a home network is not moving, this bored teen has a lot of time on his side.

To make matters worse, the home user is going to do more personal activiy on the home wireless network like shop online and read email, both activities that are leaving him wide open for identity theft.

Mobile Users have it especially tough. All the networks they use fall into one of two categories, either wide-open or shared-security. Let's take a look at both:

  • Open Wifi - this is your cafes, sandwich shops, and hotels that attract you by offering easily accessable wifi Internet. Here's the problem. It's like homey to a pack of flies. Hackers love monitoring open wireless networks because they know there will be a lot of people jumping on those networks at peak times (lunch and evenings) when they can harvest a lot of information at one time. I've ran tests to see how much information is available durring a typical lunch period and even created a couple vidieos for you to watch for yourself. I've found that within about a 2 hour lunch period at a moderately busy sandwich shop at least 10 accounts can be "harvested" at a time. That means a potential of 10 victems to Identity Theft per day per wireless location. Those numbres are staggering.
  • Shared "Secured" Wifi - the "security" on a "secured" network just gives a false sense of secrurity. You can see from our video section that the security can easily be broken. What's even worse, the establishment (usually hotels) will tell you the password in an effort to help you get connected online - there's no need to try to hack the wireless password. The hacker just picks up a lobby phone and asks for the wifi password so he can do his work. And a hotel is certainly a treasure trove of information. A cafe may have new faces for a while, but eventually it's going to be the same crowd all over again. A hotel on the other hand will always have a fresh set of victems coming through.
